Cantor Ministry
A cantor is an important part of the liturgy, because they act as a "singer and leader of congregational song" (Sing to the Lord 37). Singing, especially the singing of the congregation, is important in the liturgy because "unity of hearts is attained through unity of voices" (Musicam Sacram 5). The cantor will sing in dialogue with the congregation during certain parts of the Mass, such as the responsorial psalm and kyrie. At other parts of the Mass and during hymns, the cantor joins their voice to that of the congregation. The cantor ministry seeks individuals who have an understanding of the Catholic liturgy and possess skills in vocal technique. We hope to have 6-8 cantors, and each will sing once every other week. If you are interested in becoming a cantor, please send an email to music@stpeterdamian.org or call 630-837-5411 ext. 114 and a time will be arranged to meet and for a short audition.
